A very unique and first of its kind community based retirement home called NORHOMES, was inaugurated by the Flag Officer Commanding- in–Chief, Southern Naval Command , V Adm. S P S Cheema PVSM, AVSM, NM on Saturday, 21 Feb 2015 at Thottuva, Koovapaddy Panchayat, Ernakulam District. The guests of honour at the function were respected Shri. Saju Paul MLA, VAdm. K N Sushil PVSM, AVSM, NM (Retd), President NFKC, Shri. Babu Joseph, Chairman District Panchayat Development & Welfare Board & State Lottery, Shri. P Y Paulose, President, Koovapaddy Panchayat and Smt. Jancy George, Ward member, Mrs. Gaganjeet Cheema, President, Naval Wives Welfare Association (Southern Region).

V Adm. R P Suthan, PVSM, AVSM, VSM (Retd), the President of NORHOMES presided over the function. This welfare project was initiated by the Navy Foundation Kerala Charter for its veteran Naval Officer/ widow members and then expanded to accommodate veteran officers/widows of the Army and Air Force also. The Retirement home is a five storied complex catering for 55 veteran officer couples/ widows to stay as a community with all facilities for comfort and care provided commonly. The project costing Rs 12 Crores has been entirely funded by the members themselves to cater for their needs in the changed social environment. This facility will be made available to the other needy veteran service officers/widows also. The function was well attended by senior officer of the Navy, veteran service officers, civilian dignitaries and locals of the neighborhood. As a pilot project it sets the way for similar community based senior citizens home to come up all over the country.

During the function the C-in C donated several naval artifacts to the NORHOMES which shall give to the veterans, nostalgic memory of their days in the Navy. He also assured continued support of the Navy for this veteran community venture.






NORHOMES stands for Naval Officers Retirement Homes and is a project initiated by the Navy Foundation Kerala Charter in early 2011. The project is a first of its kind, a community based, self-help concept where the Veteran Naval Officers have come together to create a Retirement home for themselves a place where they can live together in comfort, care and mutual support. The project was registered as the Naval Officers Retirement Homes Owners Association (Reg. No: ER 430/11). The facilities at NORHOMES would be made available to the defence serving and veteran officer’s community.

Location. NORHOMES is located at Thottuva, which is 43 Kms from Vyttila, 12 Kms from Cochin International Airport, on the southern bank of River Periyar between Kaladdy and Perumbavoor. On the Northern Bank is Malayatoor, a Christian Pilgrimage center. To the east is Kodanad the elephant training center and to the west is Kaladdy the birth place of Sri Adi Shankaracharya. The Sri Sri Ravishankar’s Art of Living Ashram and International Village, Mangala Bharti Ashram and Dhanavantri kshetram are in the neighborhood.

Facilities. NORHOMES is a multi-storied complex (Ground +4 floors) in 125 cents of land. The building has been specially designed and constructed to meet the specific needs of senior citizens and to be ecofriendly. There are 55 studio type dwelling units. Each unit is identical, with an area of 526-sqft having a drawing room and a bedroom with attached toilet, balcony and a pantry. The overall cost of the project has been Rs 12 Crores and has all facilities/amenities required for a comfortable living. The common amenities are as mentioned below.

o Common Kitchen and Dining Hall
o Recreation Room & sporting activities
o Home theater system.
o Library/ Reading Room.
o Housekeeping, laundry, Security and Maintenance services.
o Intercom/Telephone/Internet /TV services.
o Sick Bay catering for essential inpatient facility, medical equipment/medicine nursing care and visiting doctors.
o Swimming Pool with Jacuzzi and a kids section.
o Garden area & walk ways.
o Parking, Power room, standby generator, well.
o Two lifts (passenger and service)
o Guest rooms facilities for use by family & friends visiting.


A multi-specialty hospital is under development just 3.5 kms away. This hospital could be empanelled and be of much use to the residents. This hospital in future is expected to become a Medical college and will be called the Gurukul Institute of Medical Sciences.

Membership. As it is a community based project, all members have to be from the defence service officer’s background (Retired/Serving/Spouse). After the lifetime of the member and spouse the person inheriting could become the next member if eligible. If a non-eligible person is inheriting, then the person could transfer the dwelling unit to a person who is eligible to become a member and receive the prevailing asset value. A member could also exit at any time by transferring his dwelling unit to another eligible person. Management would help in the transfer.
The membership is limited to the number of dwelling units and is fully subscribed at present. The breakdown of the 55 members is as given below.
